  Mumbaikars paid Rs 46K cr tax to BMC in 5 years

It has come to light that Mumbaikars paid Rs 46,072 crore in taxes to the BMC in the last five years. The opposition wants to know why civic services still remain pathetic. BMC's chief accountant Ram Dhas said its revenue income goes towards operational maintenance, loan repayment and establishment costs. "This is one way of providing services. Paying salary to the person who cleans the streets translates into services provided." The opposition says taxpayers have not received services in return for their money.

People are being cheated at the hands of the ruling alliance, said Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Niyaz Vanu. "Despite paying so much money by way of taxes, roads remain potholed, water is not distributed equally and waterlogging continues." Congress corporator Sameer Desai said:
